I've bestowed the name "Bella" on the kitten. I guess it is a nod to TWILIGHT. We went back to the vet last Friday. Our regular vet says that he can do the surgery, but Bella needs to weigh at least two pounds. This puts the surgery out to about a month away.
I have been worried about Bella being outside. Although she appears to have some vision in one eye, she still struggles to see. She wants to play with the other kittens, but their rough and tumble antics are a little hard for her. She gamely tries, then gives up and pursues a leaf to play with or bounces around the porch instead.
The surprising thing in all of this; however, has been my husband. I expected him to be tender-hearted towards her and to take an interest in her after he realized how attached I'd gotten to her. This is the man that has stopped and gotten turtles off the road, tried to help an injured fawn and adopted and brought home our cat Ginger when she showed up one night at a convenience store we owned.
This man I have seen over the last few days is not the same person who did all those things. He has been cruel and uncaring about Bella's fate. He suggested taking her to the pound where she could be put to sleep. He wants all of our cats to go to the pound. He keeps insisting he doesn't own the cats, they are strays.
Twice now I have brought up the issue about letting her stay inside. He doesn't want to discuss it. He wants all the cats gone. I think this is his sisters doing. She has apparently been telling him that he needs to get rid of them. She says that they will get rabies and she wonders how we have the money to feed them. Ironically, this is all from the woman that has two cats, two dogs, a pig, chickens, ducks and a rabbit.
So...we are at an impasse on this one. My uncaring, irrational husband and I. This is not the man I married. It is not the man I love. I'm not sure what all she has been saying to him. I can hear his sister's words though when he speaks. I don't know how such a shrew of a woman can influence my own husband's tendency to have a caring nature, but so far....she is winning.
